Point Roberts Residents Survive the Chilean Earthquake

By equinox - Posted on 30 March 2010

Knick and Lyn Pyles, summertime residents of Freeman's Beach in Point Roberts spend their winters (and Chile's summers) on the central coast of Chile in a town called Coliumo. This location was very close to the epicenter of the February 26th, 8.8 magnitude earthquake which caused such terrible devastation. They experienced the full force of this earthquake and the ensuing tsunami struck their region hard, destroying the homes and livelihoods of their friends and neighbors.

Despite the shock and difficulty of their situation they have made the effort to share the experience with us in a deeply moving blog.  I encourage you to read of their amazing survival and experiences and to share your thoughts with them. Their blog allows you to post comments and you can easily share your well wishes with them.

Community Info: There will be an emergency exercise at the Bellingham Airport on September 24, 2011 for Community Emergency Response Team members who are willing to participate. This exercise involves many emergency departments in Bellingham and is a great way to participae and learn first hand the overall rescue process. For more information or to enroll, contact Andrew 945-1801.

September Tip: Remember, in any emergency or disaster, communication between family members is important and sometimes difficult. Experts suggest having an out-of-state relative or friend as a central point for all family members to connect with and leave messages. This will enable members to contact someone who is not affected by the emergency. Stay connected to stay safe.
