Obama declares flood disaster for Washington

January 30, 2009. WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Barack Obama on Friday declared a federal disaster for Washington state due to this month’s severe flooding, landslides and mudslides.

Damage surveys done by the state found more than 100 homes destroyed and more than 2,000 damaged by severe winter weather. Storms also damaged roads, water systems and farms.

Individuals in eight counties -- King, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, Snohomish, Thurston, and Wahkiakum -- are eligible for individual assistance under the move.

Funding is available to the state, eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities.

All of the state's 39 counties are eligible to apply for grants.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated counties can begin applying for assistance Saturday by registering online.
