PREP food storage

By Henry M. Rosenthal - Posted on 02 February 2009

Feb. 3, 2009 On January 24, 2009, Andrew and Henry transported approximately 250 lbs of long term storage food to the PREP storage area of the Benson Fire Hall. It was unloaded and transferred to the designated area by Ed, Virginia and Mark. Subsequently, about 100 bottles of assorted waters and drinks were placed in the same designated area along with a small amount of baby food. Zero cost to PREP. There is a sufficient variety and quantity of food to last five to seven day for about fifty people. The next segment of this project is to original date code all items (where available) and develop pull or out of service dates and mark containers and packages appropriately. Two sets of inventory lists will be set up. One in designated kitchen area and one in PREP file. When food reaches "Best Used By" date, food is then donated to volunteer organizations (Fire Dept., etc.) and or is disposed of properly. As inventory decreases, information is forwarded to Point Roberts Food Bank for timely replacement.

Community Info: There will be an emergency exercise at the Bellingham Airport on September 24, 2011 for Community Emergency Response Team members who are willing to participate. This exercise involves many emergency departments in Bellingham and is a great way to participae and learn first hand the overall rescue process. For more information or to enroll, contact Andrew 945-1801.

September Tip: Remember, in any emergency or disaster, communication between family members is important and sometimes difficult. Experts suggest having an out-of-state relative or friend as a central point for all family members to connect with and leave messages. This will enable members to contact someone who is not affected by the emergency. Stay connected to stay safe.
